Toronto Ontario is the Canada’s largest economic capital and the centre of the
greater golden horseshoe, located on the shore of lake Ontario. It is not only
the home of the provincial government but the largest city in Canada and the
fifth largest city in North America. As of 2006 Toronto’s population is
2,503,281 and growing. Residents of Toronto are referred to as “Torontonians”.
Toronto is also referred to as the Global City with leading economic sectors
which include, business, finance, telecommunications, transportation, media,
arts and much more. The Toronto Stock exchange is the world’s sixth largest.
The world’s largest free standing structure, the CN Tower, finds it home in
Toronto, Ontario. Standing 553.33 meters (1,815 ft 5 in) tall. It attracts more
than two million visitors a year being the signature icon of Toronto. Toronto’s
CN Tower is also located in the Guinness World Records as being the world’s
tallest building, built in 1976.
The building and design concept originated from the 1968 Canadian National
Railway. The desire to build a TV and Radio communications platform for the
Toronto Area and demonstrate the strength of the Canadian Industry, particularly
the CN.
Between the late 1960’s and early 1970’s Toronto had undergone numerous
constructions on skyscrapers in the downtown core. Construction on the CN Tower
began on February 6, 1973. And then finally opened to the public on June 26th,
1976. The construction costs exceeded $330,000,000.
The Rogers Centre formally known as the Sky Dome is located next to the CN
Tower. Built in 1986-1989, its home to the Toronto Blue Jays and the Canadian
Football League’s Toronto Argonauts. Its primary purpose is to host sporting
events however it is also used for conventions, trade fairs and concerts.
